Factors Which Influence Hair Growth for Natural Hair

Factors Which Influence Hair Growth for Natural Hair

One of the many myths about African American hair is that it will not grow long. This is simply not true. Natural or afro hair will grow long. There are a number of factors that influence hair growth.
The first is to get the ends trimmed regularly. When the ends are not trimmed, the split ends may cause the hair to break and snap off, therefore limiting hair growth. Regularly trimming hair will help to retain the length that is gained from the roots. Natural hair does not necessarily grow faster than relaxer hair, however; it is not weakened by the chemical relaxer process and is less susceptible to breakage.
Constant combing may lead to split ends and hair breakage, therefore stifling growth. In actuality, combing is the main reason for hair breakage as using a comb can cause hair to tangle and snap. The more hair tangles, the greater force that has to be applied to remove the tangles, leading to an endless cycle of breakage.
Never comb hair dry (unless it is stretched using heat appliances such as a blow dry-er or flat iron). It is suggested that hair be combed either wet or damp, because this is when it is most pliable. However, be mindful that wet hair is also susceptible to breakage, so it must be treated much more gently.

Even if hair is combed gently, it requires repeated force on a regular basis, particularly if hair is styled frequently. Keep in mind that combing is a normal part of hair care, so some breakage is expected — just don't lose more hair than is gained. Wearing natural protective styles helps retain length.
We've just discussed styling and grooming techniques to promote and retain hair growth. But what good is it to spend all of your energy beautifying your hair, without considering the health of your overall body? It is no secret that regular exercise and prop-er nutrition directly influence the hair's integrity and overall rate of growth.
Stress can cause hair loss. Regular exercise can help reduce stress and promote blood circulation to the scalp, which helps to deliver proper nutrients to hair. Drinking 8-10 glasses of water per day will aid in improvement of your hair's overall moisture balance, therefore minimizing breakage. It is also important to consume beneficial vitamins and nutrients to promote hair growth, such as Vitamin B.
So remember that appropriate hair care and grooming techniques coupled with prop-er diet and exercise will help to ensure optimal hair growth!

Healthy Hair Tips for Cold Temperature

Healthy Hair Tips for Cold Temperature

1. Moisturize and Trim Hair Regularly to Reduce Dryness and Breakage! In general, most hair types become drier with cooler temps and less humidity. This is primarily due to the decreased activity of sebaceous glands reducing oil secretions. Not to mention, after the days in hot sun, sweating and chlorine in pools, your hair has been stripped of essential oils and nutrients. I suggest applying either a daily moisturizer (oil sheen, lotion, etc) to your hair, especially the ends which are more prone to splitting and breakage when too dry. One of my favorites for dry hair is simply basic olive oil which can be used daily or applied heavily with a plastic cap the night before shampooing or with a 30 minute moist heat treatment using like a Hair Therapy Wrap. Also, to further reduce your ends from splitting, it is just as important to get a good hair trim of at least 1/4 inch every 6 weeks as your ends are the oldest part of your hair strand.

2. Shampoo Hair Once A Week I Contrary to popular belief, even during cooler months, you should still wash your hair at least once a week followed by a moisturizing conditioner with moist heat to allow ingredients to absorb better. Because of the more frequent moisturizing products during this season, if your scalp is not cleaned often, you can get a buildup creating an environment for growth of the Pityrosporum yeast. This causes your hair follicles to become inflamed and irritated leading to a dry, itchy, flaky scalp called Seborrheic Dermatitis which is commonly called 'dandruff'. Therefore, keeping the scalp clean at least once a week or more with a medicated shampoo containing either zinc, selenium sulfide, coal tar, salicylic acid or ketoconazole to be applied and left on scalp for at least 10 minutes to allow deeper penetration into your follicles. Then follow with your favorite moisturizing shampoo. Repeat every week until under control then do at least once a month as maintenance. You may also use a Hydrocortisone Ointment from the drugstore to any itchy scalp area 2-3 times/day. If issue still persists after a month, seek clinical evaluation by your dermatologist.

3. Keep Hair Follicles Healthier From Within! Regardless of the temperature, it is just as critical to take care of the inside hair folliclesas it is to care for your hair properly on the outside. In addition to drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water daily and eating proper nutrition, you must feed your hair follicles from within as hair grows from the inside of your scalp. Topical products cannot absorb deep enough into scalp and the basic multi-vitamin hair vitamins are not specific enough. I highly recommend hair supplement, all-natural dermatologist-developed hair supplement which provides a synergistic proprietary blend of well-researched marine proteins, collagen and nutrients shown to stimulate longer, faster growing, stronger thicker healthier hair even in thin/bald areas for all hair types.
